Why should I get my contractor's license course from Freedom Business School?
Freedom offers quick, efficient and easy home study courses at the lowest prices! Our courses are focused on the exact topics needed to pass the State exams. Manuals are written entirely in layperson's language. We have approximately 155 practice tests and exam updates covering every trade and certificate classification. 95% of our students pass their State exams on the first time!

Why should I get a distance education course instead of a traditional school course?
Distance learning gives you the flexibility to take the class when you have the time. You don't have to get to school on time and sit in class after a hard day's work. You can study on the go or at home and at your own pace. And, when you have a question or need help, Freedom's Student support department is only a phone call away.

What kind of experience is required for a contractor's license?
At least four years of experience is required to qualify to take the examination. Credit for experience is given only for journey level, foreman, supervisor, contractor or owner-builder.

How can I prove my work experience?
All experience claims must be verified by a qualified and responsible person, such as a homeowner, an employer, fellow employee, other journeyman, contractor, union representative, building inspector, architect or engineer. The person verifying your claim must complete the experience certification portion of the application.

Can a self-employment experience qualify?
Yes. But you need to submit at least two work certificates for self-employed work experience.

Are there education requirements for a license?
No. You do not have to meet any education requirements in order to qualify for a license.

May I substitute any education, technical training, or apprenticeship training for the required experience?
You may receive credit for a portion of the required four years of practical experience. However, at least one year must be practical experience.

What happens if my application is not approved?
Your application may be returned to you if it is insufficient or incomplete. You must provide any missing information or make corrections and return your application to CSLB within 90 days.

Where will I take my exams?
There are eight testing locations throughout the state: San Diego, San Bernardino, Norwalk, Long Beach, Ventura, Oakland, Sacramento and Fresno. CSLB testing staff uses zip codes to assign applicants to the testing center nearest their business address.

What exams will I have to take?
There are two parts to the examination process. All applicants must pass standard Law and Business examination. In addition, you will have to pass a second test covering the specific trade or certification area for which you are applying.

What does the Law and Business examination cover?
The Law and Business exam covers variety of business and legal topics, such as business management, contracts, bid procedures, licensing, liens and dispute resolution, employee issues, labor code, bookkeeping, insurance, etc.

What are the trade exams like?
All trade exams are multiple-choice format. They cover topics relating to your specific trade classification. For example, an electrician is tested on the Electrical Codes, electrical tools, equipment and materials, trade practices, safety procedures and reading and understanding electrical plans and specifications.

What is involved with the Computer Assisted Testing (CAT) system?
In most cases you will be taking your examination on a computer. The Computer Assisted Testing (CAT) system is very easy to use. No prior experience with computers is necessary. The test monitor guides all test-takers through a short exercise to help them feel at ease with the computer.

What happens if I fail the exams?
You have to reschedule and take them again. You must pay $50 fee each time you are rescheduled. If you passed either the trade or the Law and Business exam, but failed the other, you only need to retake the exam you failed. The results are good for five years.

What are the bond requirements for a contractor's license?
Contractors must post a $12,500 license bond. The premiums range from $120 to $150 for a one-year bond and from $180 to $220 for two years.

Will I need worker's comp to receive my license?
All contractors who have employees are required to present a proof of workers' compensation insurance coverage. However, if you work by yourself, you can file an exemption certificate.

How long is a license valid?
A license is initially issued for two years. Licenses may be renewed for two years at a time if renewed on active status, or for four years if renewed on inactive status.

Can I apply for more than one classification at a time?
You can only apply for one classification on your first (original) application. After you get your original license, you can apply for an additional (supplemental) classification.
